Looking after it

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Dry any water that sits on the shelves so it cannot work under the finish. Do not use abrasive cleaners on the powder coat.

Storage in the one space every bathroom wastes.

A three shelf steel unit that stands over the toilet, clears most cisterns at 87 cm, and comes with anti-tip hardware.

The space above a toilet is usually the only unused wall in a bathroom, and this unit is built to stand in it rather than replace anything.

The bottom shelf clears the floor by 87 cm, which is above most standard and taller cisterns.

Three flat shelves take towels, toiletries and the things that otherwise live on the windowsill.

It is steel with a rust resistant white finish, so bathroom damp does not mark it the way a laminate unit swells.

Anti-tip hardware is included, which is what makes a tall, narrow unit safe in a room where people reach up to the top shelf.

Bathroom Storage Shelf

Small bathrooms rarely have space for another cupboard, but almost all of them have a blank wall above the toilet. An over-the-toilet unit is the one piece of storage that adds shelving without taking any floor space that was being used.

Bathroom Storage Shelf

The measurement that decides whether it works for you is the clearance. The bottom shelf sits 87 cm from the floor, which passes over most standard cisterns and most taller ones. Measure from your floor to the top of your cistern before ordering, because that single number is what determines whether it stands where you want it.

Bathroom Storage Shelf

Three shelves at 2.3 kg each is honest capacity rather than a headline figure. That is folded towels, toiletries, a basket of odds and ends. It is not where you stack paint tins, and the shelves are open, so anything small enough to roll is better off in a box.

Bathroom Storage Shelf

Steel with a rust resistant finish is the right material for a room that gets damp several times a day. Laminate and chipboard units swell at the edges once moisture reaches the core, and there is no fixing that once it starts.

Bathroom Storage Shelf

The anti-tip hardware is not optional in practice. The unit is 164 cm tall and 26 cm deep, and anything with those proportions needs a fixing at the top. It is included in the box, and fitting it is what makes the difference between a stable unit and one that moves when a child pulls on the bottom shelf.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. This shop's own returns policy gives you 15 days from purchase to send it back in its original packaging with proof of purchase, and we refund the price you paid for the goods.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Australian Consumer Law covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bathroom storage shelf?

It is a shelving unit built to stand over the toilet and use the vertical space above it. This one has three shelves on a steel frame, 164.3 cm tall and 26 cm deep.

How does a shelf over the toilet work?

The frame straddles the toilet and stands on the floor either side of it, so the shelves sit above the cistern. Anti-tip hardware then fixes the top of the unit to the wall so it cannot pull forward.

Will it fit over my toilet?

The bottom shelf is 87 cm from the floor, which clears most standard and taller cisterns. Measure from your floor to the top of your cistern before ordering, because that is the number that decides it.

How wide and deep is it?

It is 59.1 cm wide and 26 cm deep, and 164.3 cm tall overall.

How much weight will each shelf hold?

Each of the three shelves is rated to 2.3 kg. That covers folded towels, toiletries and similar bathroom items.

Is it wall mounted or freestanding?

Freestanding. It stands on the floor, and the included anti-tip hardware fixes the top to the wall for stability rather than taking the weight.

Do I have to fit the anti-tip hardware?

Yes, fit it. The unit is 164 cm tall on a 26 cm footprint, and anything that shape needs securing at the top. The hardware is in the box.

Can I use it in a rented flat?

The unit itself stands on the floor, but the anti-tip bracket needs a fixing in the wall, which usually means one small screw. Check your tenancy terms before drilling.

Will it rust?

The steel has a rust resistant white finish made for bathroom damp. Drying standing water off the shelves helps it last, as with any finished steel.

What can I store on it?

Towels, linens, toiletries, cleaning supplies and decorative items. The shelves are open and flat, so small loose items are tidier in a basket or box.

Can I use it outside the bathroom?

Yes. The same unit suits a utility room, a laundry room or a garage, anywhere you want narrow shelving that does not eat floor space.

Does it come with everything needed to assemble it?

Yes, the unit and all mounting hardware are included, along with the anti-tip fittings.

How hard is it to put together?

It is a straightforward flat pack assembly following the supplied instructions. Assemble it lying down, then stand it in place and fit the anti-tip bracket.

Does it need to be screwed into the toilet or the floor?

No. It stands on the floor under its own weight, and only the anti-tip bracket fixes to the wall.

Is it suitable for a small bathroom?

That is what it is for. It uses the wall above the toilet, which is usually the only space in a small bathroom that is not already doing something.

Can I put plants or ornaments on it?

Yes, within the 2.3 kg per shelf rating. A planted pot gets heavy once watered, so weigh it wet rather than dry.

What colour is it?

White.

Are the shelves adjustable in height?

No, the shelf positions are fixed by the frame. The clearance under the bottom shelf is 87 cm.

Will it fit a back-to-wall or concealed cistern toilet?

Usually yes, and often with room to spare, because those toilets are lower than an exposed cistern. Check the width of the enclosure against the 59.1 cm span.

Can it be locked?

No. It is open shelving with no doors or drawers, so anything that needs to be out of reach of children should go elsewhere.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap, and dry it. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which scratch the finish and give damp a way in.

Will it mark the wall?

The anti-tip bracket needs one fixing point, so there will be a screw hole behind it. The frame itself stands clear of the wall.

Is it stable on an uneven floor?

Bathroom floors are rarely perfectly flat. Stand it in place before fitting the bracket, check for rock, and pack a foot if needed so all four feet touch before you fix the top.

Can two people use the shelves at once in a shared bathroom?

There are three shelves, so splitting them by person is the usual approach. The top shelf is the one most often used for spares rather than daily items.

Does it come flat packed?

Yes, it ships flat packed with instructions and hardware.

What if a part is missing from the box?

Contact us with your order number and we will sort it out. Missing hardware is a fault, so your rights are unaffected by the 15 day change of mind period.

Is it heavy enough to stay put on its own?

It is stable standing, but stability standing still and stability when someone pulls on it are different things. Fit the anti-tip bracket.

Can I use it over a washing machine instead?

Only if the 87 cm clearance suits. Most washing machines are around 85 cm tall, so it is tight, and a machine on a spin cycle moves in a way a toilet does not.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days in Australia and seven to ten days to other countries. Delivery is free on orders of $75 or more, so this item qualifies on its own; below $75 an express charge of $27.50 applies.

Can I return it if it does not fit?

Yes. It is a stock item, so you have the full 14 day right to change your mind, and your rights if anything arrives faulty are separate and unaffected.

Measuring up for an over-the-toilet unit

4 min read SpaceSaver Australia

The one measurement that matters

Over-the-toilet units get returned for a single reason: the buyer measured the room and not the cistern.

The number to take is floor to the top of your cistern. On this unit the bottom shelf sits 87 cm from the floor, so anything below that clears. Standard close-coupled cisterns are usually in the mid seventies, taller traditional ones can reach the mid eighties, and if yours is above 87 cm the unit will not sit down properly no matter how much room there is either side.

Then check the width. The frame spans 59.1 cm, so the legs need floor either side of the toilet within that span, clear of a pedestal, a pipe boxing or a skirting board.

Depth is the one people forget. At 26 cm it projects about as far as a towel rail, which matters in a narrow bathroom where the door swings past it.

Freestanding, but fix the top anyway

This unit stands on the floor. The anti-tip hardware in the box is not carrying the shelves, it is stopping the whole thing coming forward if someone pulls on it.

It is worth being blunt about why that matters. The unit is 164 cm tall on a 26 cm footprint. That is a tall, narrow object at head height in a room with a hard floor, and children pull on things at exactly the height of the bottom shelf. One screw into the wall takes five minutes.

If you are renting and cannot drill, the honest answer is that this is not the right unit for you, rather than that it is fine without the bracket.

What three shelves at 2.3 kg actually holds

Shelf ratings sound small until you weigh what you were going to put there.

A folded bath towel is around 700 g, so two or three per shelf is comfortable. Bottles are heavier than they look: a full litre of shower gel is a kilo on its own. Toilet rolls weigh almost nothing and take the space instead.

The shelves are open and flat, which is good for towels and poor for anything that rolls. A shallow basket on the top shelf turns it from a place things fall off into usable storage, and it hides the clutter you did not want on show anyway.

Living with steel in a damp room

The finish is rust resistant, which is not the same as saying damp is irrelevant.

What shortens the life of any finished steel in a bathroom is water sitting on a horizontal surface, usually under something. A wet bottle left in the same spot, or a damp towel folded on the shelf every day, keeps one patch permanently wet.

Wiping the shelves down now and then, and drying anything that has sat wet, is the whole of the maintenance. Abrasive cleaners are the thing to avoid, because scratching the finish is what gives moisture a way to the steel underneath.
