A floor stand needs no fixing at all and can be moved, which suits a rented garage or a hard wall. A wall rack or hanger clears the floor completely but has to be fixed to something solid.

Buying home storage and organisation online
We sell storage and organising products and nothing else, so this is the short version of what we have learned: what is worth spending on, what needs a licensed trade, and what to measure before you order.
What is worth spending on
Storage has two kinds of purchase in it. There is the piece that carries weight and is fixed to a wall or a floor, which is a bike rack, a hanger or a shelving unit, and getting that one wrong is expensive. And there is the piece that needs little or no fitting, which is most of the bags, boxes and carts.
The first group is worth paying for, because the failure mode is expensive: a rack that pulls away from the wall can damage the wall and whatever was on it. The second group is worth buying on fit rather than on price.
Fixing to a wall, and what it will hold
The wall-mounted racks and hangers need a fixing appropriate to the wall they go on, and the load each one carries is published on its own page. Nothing in this range is plumbed or hardwired, so no licensed trade is required for any of it.
That is not a disclaimer we add at the end. It changes what you should buy: if the wall you want a rack on is plasterboard with no stud where you need it, a freestanding rack is a better purchase than a wall mount, and no amount of specification will change that.
Steel, resin and fabric, and how each wears
A coated metal finish is easy to wipe clean, but an abrasive cream or a bleach-based cleaner can take the coating off, and it does not come back.
Powder-coated steel is a sensible choice in a garage, where a bike comes in wet and the wall is cold. Resin suits anything that lives outdoors. Fabric and PVC are for what goes away for a season and comes back, which is what the vacuum and storage bags are for.
Getting a bike off the floor
Bikes lying on a garage floor take more room than anything else in it. A wall hanger or a wall rail lifts each bike clear, a floor rack keeps several upright in a row, and an upright stand needs no fixing at all. Check the wheel size and any weight rating on the product page first.
Measuring the space before you order
Three measurements prevent most sizing mistakes. The height from the floor to the top of the cistern, for an over-the-toilet shelf. The width of the gap beside the vanity, the toilet or the washer, for a cabinet or a rolling cart. And the wheel size of your bike, for a bike rack.
